Minecraft Dungeons Honest Review

Minecraft Dungeons is a brand new game by Mojang, Double Eleven, and Xbox Game Studios. It’s based on the universe and lore of the original Minecraft and introduces plenty of new gameplay mechanics. In fact, it’s a completely different title that steps far away from the predecessor. However, it’s incredibly fun. Let’s take a closer look at the features of Minecraft Dungeons!

Minecraft 2?

You shouldn’t expect the Dungeons’ gameplay to be the same as in Minecraft. It’s not Minecraft 2, but a spin-off that focuses on the traditional dungeon crawler mechanics. Here you can explore randomly-generated dungeons where creepers, skeletons, and other monsters will try to stop you from unveiling mysterious secrets. Besides, get ready for detecting enemy traps, solving tricky puzzles, and finding lost treasures.

At first sight, this is a familiar Minecraft world, but it’s now much more dangerous and full of various objectives for you to complete. Due to the new auto-following isometric camera, you can clearly see who’s behind your back and prepare for a powerful attack or start running away on time.

Unlike the original game, there’s no mining and building in Minecraft Dungeons, but you won’t be disappointed as there are tons of other things to do!

Biomes and Story

The action of the game takes place in 9 different biomes inhabited with a large variety of enemies. All of them are controlled by the vicious antagonist, Arch-Illager. We won’t post spoilers here, but the truth is that the story is ultimately exciting and immersive.

Although the plot is the same for all players, the course of events and the world of the game is different for everyone. The engine of the game utilizes World Seeds to create unique dungeons of blocks that are natural for each biome you visit.

Player Classes

To fight the evil lord, you have to choose a class of your player. There are 3 options to choose from – a swordsman, a magician, and a warrior with 2 blades. A swordsman can perform power attacks with a heavy two-arm sword and drink shield potions. A mage can cast unique spells that are powerful enough to eliminate or stun hordes of enemies.

Character Editor

The gameplay difference between the 3 classes is not dramatic, but you can make every character look unique in the editor. It won’t let you import your official and vanilla skins from the original Minecraft, but the diverse library of new items will satisfy you anyway. You can also purchase additional outfits along with new DLC packs when they come out.

How to Play?

Minecraft Dungeons is a cross-platform franchise. You can order it for your PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch. The game is also rumored to appear on the upcoming next-gen consoles, including Xbox Series X and PS5. If you want to play on Nintendo Switch, you can enjoy the game in both handheld, tabletop, and dock modes. So get ready to have fun in single-player and online multiplayer on the go and the local co-op mode.

The game is available in 2 packs. You can either get a standard edition that includes the main campaign and default side quests or get Minecraft Dungeons: Hero Edition. The second one is a real bargain as it includes passes to all of the available and upcoming DLCs. If that seems not enough, embark on the journey with Minecraft Dungeons: The Rise of the Arch-Illager. This adventure novel by Matt Forbeck will be published on July 7, 2020.
